Can a Separated Wife Travel for Umrah Without Her Husband’s Permission?

19th October 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: My parents have been separated for 6 months now and have no intention of coming together again, but they are not divorced yet and unsure if they plan to do so. My mum wants to go for Umrah and to take me (son) with her as her mahram, but she wants clarity on whether it would be permissible for her to go without my father’s permission, as they are still married. Can she go if she takes me as her mahram?

Answer

In reference to your query, those acts of obedience which are not fardh such as Umrah, then seeking the husband’s permission before leaving the house or travelling is his Islamic right.[1] If he categorically refuses, then she must not go. Nevertheless, this should be resolved between the couple based on mutual understanding and only prevent her if there’s a genuine reason without leading to further conflict. If they are separated and have no intention of reuniting and a mahram will accompany her, then he should not prevent her.[2] If she travels then she bears all the necessary expenses for her Umrah trip and not her husband as that is not his obligation.[3]

As a general advice, so long as they are married and have no intention of divorce, they must first attempt reconciliation through counselling or family mediation before travelling as this is takes priority over optional worship. If she still desires to travel for Umrah, then her husband is advised to allow her so to avoid her being sinful whilst being mindful she is traveling with her baligh son.

Using Credit Card to Fund Umrah Trip

13th August 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: I will be using a credit card to fund my trip for Umrah. I will be doing a balance transfer from my credit card to my bank account and then paying the party responsible for organising everything. I will have to pay 3-5% of the amount being transferred into my account. My questions are as follows: Is paying the balance transfer permissible? Is using a credit card to fund my Umrah trip, permissible? I have every intention of paying everything back before interest starts kicking in. If the answer to the above question it is not permissible, will the Umrah itself still be valid, and not makrūh?

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

A balance transfer fee is the amount charged for transferring funds out of a credit card. It is a percentage of the loan you are transferring. A balance transfer fee is classified as a valid service charge, and therefore, it is permissible. In this case, the service charge is a one-off fee and does not generate profit on the actual loan, so it is not classed as interest.[i]

If you want to use a credit card to fund your Umrah trip, it is permissible provided you pay the balance before interest accrues. In the case that you are not able to pay everything back before interest charges start, your ‘Umrah will still be valid; however, you will be sinful for entering into the ribā-based contract and transaction. One important point to note is that it is not obligatory to complete ‘Umrah (although it is a highly emphasised sunnah), particularly when one does not have the financial ability to do so. Therefore, one should not engage in doubtful and impermissible transactions to fulfil ‘Umrah.[ii]

Performing Hajj with Unlawful Wealth

Performing Hajj with Unlawful Wealth

2nd June 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: What is the ruling on the Hajj performed with unlawful wealth? Is the obligation of Hajj fulfilled or must one repeat the Hajj again in order for the obligation to be fulfilled?

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer: If a person performs Hajj using unlawful wealth, that which is acquired through means not acceptable in Islam, then although he will be sinful for utilising impermissible wealth, the obligation of Hajj will be fulfilled, provided that all the integrals and necessary rites of Hajj are performed correctly. This is because the validity of Hajj is connected to fulfilment of its prescribed actions, whereas the sin relates to the unlawful way in which the wealth was obtained and utilised. Accordingly, though the person is blameworthy for using unlawful wealth, the obligation of Hajj is fulfilled and repeating it won’t be necessary.[1]

An important note, the fulfilment of the obligation should not be confused with acceptance. A person who undertakes Hajj with unlawful wealth exposes himself to the loss of reward and acceptance, as Allah accepts only that which is pure and free of sin.[2]

Applying Suncream During Ihram

Applying Suncream During Ihram

25th May 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: What is the ruling on a woman wearing suncreams during Ihram? Is it permissible or not?

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

In reference to your query, the ruling depends on whether the suncream is fragrant free or not. Anything externally applied to the body (or clothes) that contains fragrance should not be used during ihram.[1] Based on this, it is not permissible for a woman to wear suncream that contains fragrance during ihram. If she does, dam or sadaqah will become due depending on the amount of the suncream was applied to the limb. The amount equivalent to sadaqah fitr will be given if it was applied to less than a limb for example a small amount on the face.[2] If it were applied to an entire limb say the entirety of the face or arm or majority then she will pay dam (i.e., sacrifice a sheep, goat or 1/7th of a share of a large animal).[3] Contrarily, if the suncream is fragrance free then the ruling above will not apply and there will be no penalty for its application.

Does Shaving or Trimming Synthetic Hair Suffice to Exit Umrah Ihram?

Does Shaving or Trimming Synthetic Hair Suffice to Exit Umrah Ihram?

13th May 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: If a person is completely bold then is it permissible to implant a synthetic (non-human) wig that is permanently fixed? Also, if it cannot be removed without the help of a doctor, what would one do if they need to shave or trim their hair for Umrah? Would it suffice or not if they trim or shave the synthetic hair, even if hypothetically they have some strands of hair underneath the wig, but it is permanently fixed?

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer: With regards to the first part of your query, according to the Hanafi school the prohibition mentioned in the Hadith where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed those who attach hair and the one who seeks joining hair with hair, relates specifically to attaching human hair to one’s head.[1] Other jurists and schools do not differentiate between human and non-human hair based on their general understanding of the Hadith. The Hanafi position is the concession whilst the prohibition of all kinds according to the second view is the precautious view.  The rationale behind the exception of non-human hair is because attaching human hair was a common practice at that time and also it violated human sanctity.[2]  Non-human fibres do not entail violation of human sanctity hence, exempted. In your case, using synthetic (non-human) hair to cover baldness does not fall under this prohibition even if it is permanently fixed.[3]

As for your second query, the obligation in Umrah is to shave (halq) or trim (taqsir) one’s natural hair growing from the head.[4] This obligation is connected to actual hair’s growth from the head, not to the artificial hair. In the case of complete baldness when there is no hair to remove, then the ruling is to pass the blade over it but if that is not possible, then the obligation of halq (shaving) or taqsir (trim) is dropped due to necessity.[5]

If natural strands of hair exist beneath a permanently fixed synthetic wig, the obligation cannot be fulfilled because trimming or shaving apply to the natural hair alone, not to the synthetic hair. If the wig cannot be removed except through medical surgery, and the hair cannot be accessed, then the person will be excused due to inability in which case, he may exit the Ihram without incurring a sin or any further penalty.

Menstruating Woman Repeating Umrah Tawaf without Ihram

21st April 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: A woman in the state of Ihram menstruates and performs umrah in that state. After she became pure, she repeated her umrah Tawaf but without Ihram. Does she still need to give a dam? Please clarify in detail.

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

As a general principal, a woman who is menstruating must wait until she is clean, have ghusl and then perform her Umrah, after which she will exit the Ihram.[1] Is she does perform Umrah during her menses, then the Umrah remain valid except she must pay a compensatory penalty, a Dam. If she repeats the tawaf of Umrah in the state of purity, then the Dam drops and won’t be liable for anything even if repeated without Ihram.[2] When repeating the Tawaf, you must make the intention beforehand.

Wearing a Safety Harness or a Sling in the State of Ihrām

Wearing a Safety Harness or a Sling in the State of Ihrām

3rd March 2026

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: Shortly after Ramadhān, we will be travelling for Umrah and will be taking a 22-month-old infant with us. To keep the child safe, is it permissible for his father or any other male guardian to wear a safety harness/sling while in the state of Ihrām? Also please clarify if there is any difference in hukm for different types of harnesses as some can be on the adult’s wrist, some can be on their chest and some can be on their back.

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer: In reference to your query, as a general principle, a male in the state of Ihrām is prohibited from wearing sewn garments that are tailored to fit the body or limbs in the manner of normal clothing.[1] The prohibition relates to garments worn as clothing, such as shirts, trousers and similar stitched attire. As for wearing a child safety harness or sling, then such items are not regarded as clothing rather as functional carrying aids. Therefore, wearing a baby sling for the purpose of carrying or securing a young child is permissible in the state of Ihrām.[2]

Always remember that the determining factor is whether the item resembles ordinary stitched clothing worn as attire. If it is merely a device used to carry the child even if worn over the shoulders, chest or back, it does not take the ruling of prohibited garments, and therefore no penalty (dam or sadaqah) is required.[3]

Likewise, wearing a wrist tether is permissible as it is not clothing. Similarly, a chest or back carrier is allowed provided it remains a functional support device only and not fitted garment resembling conventional dress as explained above.

Crossing the Boundary Without Reciting the Talbiyah

29th September 2025

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: I went to perform Umrah. I wore the Ihram at the Miqat and made the intention for Umrah. I also offered the two Rakats which are Sunnah. However, I forgot to recite the Talbiyah and crossed the Miqat without saying it. I ended up reciting the Talbiyah when starting the Tawaf. I didn’t know that saying the Talbiyah at Miqat is necessary. What should I do now? Will my Umrah still be valid? Is there any penalty for this?

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:
In reference to your query, one does not become a muhrim (a person in the state of Ihrām) with intention alone. To accompany the intention with the words of talbiyah or another utterance of glorification of Allāh expressed in any language is necessary otherwise the Ihram won’t be complete. If anyone crosses the miqat without reciting talbiyah, then offering a penalty of a dam – sacrificing a sheep, goat or one-seventh of a large animal – becomes necessary. In your situation, due to you crossing the boundary without reciting talbiyah until you started your tawaf and performed Umrah, then though your Umrah is complete, a penalty of a dam will be necessary due to delaying the talbiyah.

Menstruating Before Ihrām

22nd July 2025

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: I need some advice and clarification in the case of three possible scenarios please. I am travelling for ʿUmrah in a couple of weeks’ time. My questions are:

  1. What do I do if I come into ihrām and then start my period before tawāf and saʿī?
  2. How do I get out of ihrām in the above-mentioned situation?
  3. 3. Should I come into ihrām for ʿUmrah if I am already on my period before reaching the mīqāt?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Thank you for your query.

  • If a woman enters ihrām for ʿUmrah and then starts her menstrual cycle before performing tawāf and saʿī, then she must remain in ihrām and wait until her menstruation ends, thereafter perform ghusl, and then perform tawāf and saʿī. Menstruation does not invalidate the ihrām, nor does it remove its obligations.[1]
  • You cannot exit ihrām until you have completed both tawāf and saʿī. If you began ʿUmrah after entering into ihrām, then menstruated before tawāf, you are still in ihrām, and the prohibitions of ihrām remain in effect. You must wait until your period ends perform ghusl then do tawāf, saʿī, and finally cut your hair to exit ihrām. A woman cannot exit ihrām before completing the ʿUmrah acts even due to menstruation.[2]
  • Yes, you must still enter into ihrām at or before the mīqāt, even if you are menstruating. You cannot pass the mīqāt without ihrām if you intend to do ʿ Being in a state of haydh (menstruation) does not prevent you from making intention for ihrām. If you pass the mīqāt without ihrām, a dam will compulsory. [3]

Can a Small Qurbani Animal Suffice for a Family?

                                                                                                                                                            18th June 2025

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

Question: Can two or more people or family members share in the Qurbani of a small animal? Please answer with evidence.

الجواب حامداً و مصلياً

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

In reference to your query, it’s not permissible for two or more individuals to share in the Qurbani of a small animal such as a goat or sheep. The Qurbani of a small animal is valid on behalf of a single person only.[1] Only large animals such as camels and cow can suffice up to maximum seven people.[2] A famous report from a companion in Sahih Muslim states;

“We participated in the sacrifice with the Messenger of Allah (saw) during the year of Hudaiybiyyah with a camel on behalf of seven people and a cow on behalf of seven people”.[3]

Those who permit more than one people sharing in a goat or sheep use the following narration. A companion reports, “A man would sacrifice a sheep on of behalf of himself and members of his household during the time of Prophet (saw).”[4]

However, this Hadith means that a man would offer a single sheep to fulfil his own obligation, while simultaneously intending to include his household in the reward only. This narration does not imply that a single sheep fulfilled the obligation for multiple individuals. If more than one adult in the household is obligated to offer Qurbani, then each must offer a separate sacrifice, or arrange one to be made on his behalf.[5]

In conclusion, the Qurbani of a small animal (e.g., goat or sheep) is valid for one person only, while a large animal (cow or camel) can be shared by up to seven people.
