Answer

In reference to the above question breast milk itself is pure. However, once it is consumed by the infant, reaches the stomach and then vomited then it depends on if the baby vomited a mouthful or not. If it was a mouthful vomit then it is impure.[1] This is due to the milk mixing with the other impure content juices inside the stomach that now renders the babyโ€™s vomit major impurity (najasat ghaleezah). The ruling on major impurity is that if the mouthful of vomit soils the clothes or body equal or more than a dirham [50p or ยฃ2 coin] they then become necessary to wash.[2] If the baby vomited slightly (after reaching its stomach) less than a mouthful then it is overlooked and not deemed impure.[3]

Remember that the above ruling was only if the vomit reaches the babyโ€™s stomach. If the milk came out due to a reflux reaction without reaching the stomach then this will not be classed as impure at all because it has not mixed with the impure content of the stomach.[4] Its smell can be a distinguishing factor in determining whether it is actual vomit or merely spitting the milk back out. The actual vomit displays a thicker texture with an odour smell unlike the milk that is spat out because of a reflux.[5]

Answer: In reference to your query, if a small amount of najash falls into a bucket of water or a water tank, the water will become impure in both scenarios. The mentioned amounts of water are regarded as โ€˜maaโ€™ul qaleelโ€™ within the books of jurisprudence which become impure regardless if it changed any of the waterโ€™s qualities or not.

Removing Impurity from the Clothes

Question: What is the ruling on one dirham rule or palm size and small particles of impurity falls on clothes or on body? Is it considered as pure or not and is the Salฤh valid or not?ย

ย

ุงู„ุฌูˆุงุจ ุญุงู…ุฏุงู‹ ูˆ ู…ุตู„ูŠุงู‹

Answer: In reference to your query, one dirham quantity is used was used to determine the validity of the Salฤh which is roughly equivalent to the size of oneโ€™s inner palm circle. If impurity remain on the clothes or body and Salฤh is offered in such a condition, the Salฤh itself is valid.[1] However, this does not mean that the impurity no longer needs to be washed off.[2] The Salฤh being valid does not necessarily imply that the Salฤh is not makruh in such a state. It should therefore be washed regardless of its quantity.

Question: Iย have a problem with continuously passing gas, however every single source I’ve checked in regard to qualifying as a ma’dhoor states that it should be as excessive to the point I cannot perform a fardh Salah without my wudhu being invalidated. The passing of gas is random, and mostly I am able to keep my wudhu and pray my fardh Salah but not enough for the sunnah muakkidah or witr salah sometimes as Iโ€™m having to perform wudhu twice. Do I qualify as a ma’dhoor? Am I sinful for leaving out the sunnah mu’akkadah?

ย ุงู„ุฌูˆุงุจ ุญุงู…ุฏุงู‹ ูˆ ู…ุตู„ูŠุงู‹

In the name of Allฤh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer: In reference to your query, the books of fiqh define a maโ€™dhoor person to be one having such an ailment which encompasses the complete time of one full salah wherein it is almost impossible to preform wudhu and perform salah. [1] As explained in your question, this is not quite the case in your circumstance as you are at least able to perform the faraaโ€™idh of the salah without the excuse occurring. Due to this, your condition will not class you as a maโ€™dhoor.[2] It may be a good idea to perform your sunnah muโ€™akkadah earlier with one wudhu and then your fardh later with a new wudhu or vice versa depending on the order of the sunan and fardh.

Washing Impure Clothes in a Washing Machine

Question: Does automatic washing machine purify clothes and can we mix pure and impure clothes? If not then how we can wash najas from the clothes? Can we add detergent in machine?

ุงู„ุฌูˆุงุจ ุญุงู…ุฏุงู‹ ูˆ ู…ุตู„ูŠุงู‹

In the name of Allฤh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer: In reference to your query, a washing machine uses both water and detergent to wash dirt out of clothes. Clothes are usually filled into the main compartment with detergent and washing powder in their respective trays. Once set, the water valves are opened to allow the water and powder/detergent to mix within the clothes. The detergent pulls away the dirt from the clothes and is then drained out. Fresh water is then poured into the machine again and spun at fast speeds and drained out multiple times to wash out the detergent from the clothes.[1]

Ideally it is best to wash impure clothes before mixing them with pure, soiled clothes before mixing in a washing machine but, if this is not done then due to the way the machine operates in that water and other detergents are used, the clothes will all be regarded as pure because the impurity is removed by the end of the wash cycle and water is exchanged within the wash cycle multiple times. Thus, mixing pure with impure clothes would not be an issue at all. [2]

Constant Doubts about Impurity

23rd December 2020

Question: I am very confused and worried about the purity of my house from impurities due to my child who is 3 years old. She sometimes leaks her pamper in the middle of the night and when I change her trouser her feet get touched by the wet trouser. And when she wakes up in the morning, she walks with those feet that are dry from urine. Sometimes the floor is a bit moist because the air conditioner is on. Also while I change her diaper, my hand touches her diaper (sometimes the urine) and also her legs with those wet hands, and when I make her sit on the toilet to wash her, when she gets up the water trickles to her legs (where I touch while changing the diaper and the urine gets transferred a bit) and that water moves to the floor, making the floor impure. At this moment i doing see any trace of any urine in the house (no smell, colour or taste), maybe it has dried up or something. I don’t understand whether these are waswasah or genuine concerns. Kindly help me in this matter and if I have to purify the house then how.

Answer

In reference to your query impurity is determined by the presence of colour or strong smell of the stain. When its smell, colour or stain is no longer present then that is the sign that the stain itself has been removed.[1] However, where there is no physical body of impurity, the eye can see and an individual has tried to remove any remaining najasat, then the rest which may be still present (smell, stain) will be forgiven.[2] Even if an individual has doubt whether the carpet was stained or not as, certainty will always override the doubt and it will be treated as pure. A person is not required to over contemplate over the matter.

In your case with regards to dried up urine then it is essential to wash that particular area only if the stain is visible or if not but you are certain that there is urine stain.[3] There is no need to purify the entire house when the urine has not touched any other surface. As for the childโ€™s feet touching wet urine then they become impure and must be washed,[4] but if the child walks with wet feet then there is no need to worry about the carpet being soiled unless the stains are clearly visible to you.

A final note to your query is that waswasas regarding impurity and purity can constantly allow a person to have second guesses in matters. It is important to firmly fix a ruling on the matter e.g. this is pure or impure based on the above guidance and move forward from that decision without hesitation. Rulings are never based on intrusive thoughts, rather on what is apparent to us.

Answer

In order to produce leather, the skins of animals must undergo the process of tanning which is the process by which animal skins are preserved and made more durable. It is reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas radhiyallahu anhu that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said โ€œWhen the skin (of an animal) is tanned it becomes pure.โ€[1]

According to the Hanafi opinion the skin of all animals other than that of swine, once it goes through the tanning process then it becomes pure to use. [2] Therefore, it will be permissible to use jackets, belts, wallets, sofas made from leather despite them not being slaughtered according to the Islamic method.

Answer

In reference to your query, lava rock is the name given to igneous rocks when they cool and crystallize either when[1] volcanic or while still inside the crust of the earth. It is permissible to use[2] lava rock to perform Tayammum. The shariah stipulates that any material which does not burn when[3] set alight. As this does not apply to lava rock, it will be permissible[4] to perform Tayammum on them.
