Do Major Sins Make Someone a Disbeliever?

14th October 2026

Question: I wanted to ask a question. There are some things like music, Zina drinking etc which are haram, however I wanted to ask what is the ruling if you do these sins knowing they’re haram but you enjoy them knowing they’re haram? Are you a disbeliever/Kafir if you enjoy and do these sins knowing they’re haram?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

Concerning your enquiry, actions like zina (fornication), drinking alcohol, and listening to musical instruments are all major sins (kabā’ir) that cannot be treated lightly. Zina and alcohol are explicitly prohibited from the Qur’an and Sunnah. These sins are described as fisq (grave disobedience) and persisting in them openly or proudly increases their severity.[1]

As for whether or not such actions make someone a Kāfir, the foundational principle according to the Ahlu Sunnah is that no major or minor sin makes a Muslim a disbeliever so long as they don’t consider them permissible. To enjoy or seek pleasure in committing zina or drinking alcohol while knowing they are haram is not equal to kufr, but major sin that corrupts that heart and requires sincere repentance.[2] They must therefore, exert all efforts of desisting the sin.

Fatawa Hindiyyah, vol 2 p. 252

Ibn Nujaym, Bahr Rāiq, kitabul hudood vol 5 p. 123
