Does the Friday Eid Cancel out the Obligation of Jumu’ah?

Question: It is most likely that this year’s Eid al-Adha will fall on a Friday. If it does then does this cancel out the Jumu’ah prayer based on certain prophetic narrations? Kindly provide an elaborative answer in light of evidences and differences between the four schools if any.

Answer

In reference to your query, it is for definite that in the UK Eid Salāh will coincide with Jumu’ah this year. This occurred during the noble Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wasallam time as well as the era of the companions radhiyallahu anhum. There are various reports on this matter with diverse interpretations which has resulted in differences amongst the four schools of thought. Amongst the four eponym Imāms, Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah viewed that if Eid falls on a Friday then the Jumu’ah prayer is not necessary except for the Imām provided if there are sufficient people to pray Jumu’ah Salāh with him on the day otherwise not. The remaining three Imāms; Imām Abū Hanīfah rahimahullah, Imām Shāfi’ī rahimahullah and Imām Mālik rahimahullah maintain that Eid Salāh does not cancel out Jumu’ah, rather Jumu’ah is still mandatory to read.[1] The detailed evidences are below with explanation.

1. Sayyidunā Mu’awiyyah radhiyallahu anhu once enquired from Sayyidunā Zayd ibn Arqam radhiyallahu anhu whether he witnessed the two Eids (Eid and Jumu’ah) coinciding on one day (Friday). Sayyidunā Zayd radhiyallahu anhu responded in the affirmative and explained that he (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam) performed the Eid Salāh and then gave the concession of Jumu’ah saying, ‘Whoever wishes to pray it (Jumu’ah) may pray so.’”[2] This report suggests that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam did not make Jumu’ah mandatory on anyone. However, some scholars such as Imam Dhahabi rahimahullah have questioned its authenticity because of a narrator by the name of Iyās ibn Abi Ramlah in its chain being unknown and hence unreliable.[3]
2. Atā ibn Abi Rabah rahimahullah reports that Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Zubayr radhiyallahu anhu once lead the Eid Salāh on the day of Eid on a Friday in the beginning of the day. But thereafter when it came close to the time of Jumu’ah, he did not emerge so we prayed Salāh (Zuhr) individually. Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Abbas radhiyallahu anhu was at that time in Taif and when he returned, we mentioned it to him to which he responded, “He has adopted the Sunnah.”[4] This apparently suggests that Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Zubayr radhiyallahu anhu only lead the Eid Salāh but did not emerge to lead the Jumu’ah prayer which is why the people individually performed their Zuhr in its place.[5] In another narration however it was reported that Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Zubayr radhiyallahu anhu once combined the two prayers (Eid and Jumu’ah) within the two rakats before mid-day without adding any additional units of prayers until the Asr Salāh.[6] This implies that he incorporated the Jumu’ah Salāh with the two units of Eid Salāh before its time. This Hadīth has been transmitted through a sound report yet majority of the scholars apart from Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah do not permit performing Jumu’ah before its time. This was perhaps Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Zubay’s radhiyallahu anhu personal position of its permissibility.[7]
3. Another narration reported from Sayyidunā Abu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu that the Messenger of Allāh sallallahu alayhi wasallam said (on the day when Eid fell on a Friday), “Indeed two Eids have come together in your day so whoever desires then it (Eid) will suffice for Jumu’ah because we will be congregating.”[8] This is an authentic report and perhaps the most explicit one that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam allowed some congregants to depart before the Jumu’ah prayer but will congregate for the Jumu’ah prayer with other companions. This bears evidence for the three Imāms in the obligation of Jumu’ah and interpret that the Messenger of Allāh sallallahu alayhi wasallam was actually addressing the suburban village residence who used to travel to Madinah to join the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam for the Eid Salāh as was the custom in those days. The Messenger of Allāh sallallahu alayhi wasallam never wanted to burden them so he granted them concession not join him for Jumu’ah. Moreover, the fact that he said, we will be congregating alludes that the people of Madinah were not exempted from the obligation of Jumu’ah.[9] The below narration further clarifies this point.
4. It is narrated in Muwatta Mālik in a lengthy Hadīth that Abu Obaydah, a Tabi’īn, once attended the Eid Salāh (on Friday) during the Caliphate of Sayyidunā Uthmān radhiyallahu anhu. After leading the Salāh, he turned around to address the congregants saying, “Verily two Eids have been combined for you in your day so whoever from the villagers desires to wait for Jumu’ah may do so and whoever wishes to return then I have permitted you.”[10] This narration mentions that the dispensation that Sayyidunā Uthman radhiyallahu anhu (acting upon the Prophetic guidance) gave was exclusive to the villagers who lived approximately three miles outside of Madinah. This was so not to burden them for the long wait, otherwise the people of Madinah were still obligated to read the Jumu’ah Salāh with him. This is the position of the three schools where the Imām can permit the travellers to depart from the city before the Jumu’ah prayer.[11]

The above narrations are the most commonly cited ones on the topic of Jumu’ah on Eid day. It is readily noticeable that the narrations are diverse so hence leading to differences. What is important is that in the absence of a categorical narration that is devoid of differences, the general principles are to be resorted to. The three eponym Imāms, emphatically stress that Jumu’ah must be performed because Jumu’ah is an obligatory (fardh) worship whilst Eid Salāh is a lesser degree in status than Jumu’ah (wājib according to the Hanafies but Sunnah according to other). It is inconceivable to assume for a non-obligatory prayer to cancel out the obligation of Jumu’ah. Furthermore, these Imāms adduce the Quranic verse where Allāh Almighty commands the Jumu’ah prayer to be fardh. Whilst the first two narrations reported from the companions suggest no Jumu’ah prayer, narrations three and four are clear that Jumu’ah prayer is necessary. It is also argued that people living in suburban areas were Bedouins living in smaller town or villagers. As Eid Salāh was not performed in their locality, they used to travel to inner cities to perform it, in this case Madinah. The Eid Salāh used to be performed in the early part of the day and to remain until Jumu’ah time would be somewhat burdensome. Hence the concession to return was to facilitate ease for them by not obliging them to remain until the Jumu’ah prayer.

Concerning the first two reports however, then as was pointed out that the first one consisted of a problematic narrator and hence deemed as a weak narration. As for the reports of Sayyidunā Abdullah ibn Zubayr radhiyallahu anhu; one suggesting not praying Jumu’ah whilst the other incorporating it with the Eid Salāh, could imply to this being his own personal Ijihād whilst the majority not adopting it. It is unknown otherwise that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam himself or any of the other companions besides him combined the two prayers together.

So, to conclude that there are valid differences on this topic. The majority position however, including the Hanafies, is that Jumu’ah still remains obligatory if Eid falls on a Friday due the strength of the evidences. Exemption however applies to villagers and to those upon who Jumu’ah is not fundamentally necessary.

حادي عشر – صلاة الجمعة في يوم العيد:

إن صادف وجود العيد في يوم جمعة، سقط حضور الجمعة عمن صلى العيد إلا الإمام، فإنها لا تسقط عنه إلا أن لا يجتمع له من يصلي به الجمعة. وهذا مذهب الحنابلة، لما رواه أبو داود والإمام أحمد عن إياس بن أبي رملة الشامي (5) قال: «شهدت معاوية يسأل زيد بن أرقم، هل شهدت مع رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم عيدين اجتمعا في يوم واحد؟ قال: نعم، قال: فكيف صنع؟ قال: صلى العيد، ثم رخص في الجمعة» فقال: «من شاء أن يصلي فليصل» أو «من شاء أن يجمّع فليجمِّع» وروى ابن ماجه عن أبي هريرة عن رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلم قال: «اجتمع في يومكم هذا عيدان، فمن شاء أجزأه من الجمعة، وإنا مجمّعون». ولأنه تحقق المقصود بسماع خطبة العيد، فأجزأ ذلك عن سماعها ثانياً، ولأن وقتها واحد في رأيهم وهو الساعة السادسة، فسقطت إحداهما بالأخرى، كالجمعة مع الظهر. وقال الجمهور (بقية المذاهب): تجب الجمعة، لعموم الآية الآمرة بها، والأخبار الدالة على وجوبها؛ ولأنهما صلاتان واجبتان، فلم تسقط إحداهما بالأخرى، كالظهر مع العيد

(فكيف صنع) رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -؟ (قال) زيد: (صلَّى العيد ثم رخص في الجمعة، فقال: من شاء أن يصلي) الجمعة (فليصل) أي ومن شاء أن يكتفي بصلاة العيد تكفيه لحضوره عن الجمعة. قال الذهبي في “الميزان” (1) في ترجمة إياس بن أبي رملة في حديث زيد بن أرقم حين سأله معاوية: قال ابن المنذر: لا يثبت هذا فإن إياسًا مجهول، وقال في “الخلاصة” و”التقريب”: مجهول، وقال الأمير اليماني: صححه ابن خزيمة، وقال الشوكاني: صححه علي بن المديني، وفي إسناده إياس بن أبي رملة وهو مجهول. قلت: وصححه الحاكم في المستدرك ، والذهبي في “تلخيصه”، والعجب منهم كيف صححوه، وفي إسناده إياس بن أبي رملة وهو مجهول أو مختلف فيه.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَرِيفٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَسْبَاطٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ، فِي يَوْمِ جُمُعَةٍ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ، ثُمَّ رُحْنَا إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ، فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْنَا فَصَلَّيْنَا وُحْدَانًا، وَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ بِالطَّائِفِ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ ذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: «أَصَابَ السُّنَّةَ»

(فقال) ابن الزبير: (عيدان اجتمعا في يوم واحد) أي العيد والجمعة (فجمعهما) أي أداهما بجماعة (جميعًا فصلاهما ركعتين) هذا بيان لقوله: فجمعهما جميعًا، معناه أدى الجمعة والعيد في ركعتين (بكرة) أي قبل الزوال (لم يزد عليهما حتى صلى العصر) وهذا يقتضي سقوط الظهر أيضًا، لأن ظاهره أنه لم يصل الظهر.وفيه دليل على أن الجمعة إذا سقطت بوجه من الوجوه المسوغة لم يجب على من سقطت عنه أن يصلي الظهر، وإليه ذهب عطاء حكي عنه ذلك في “البحر”.

 

However, some commentators reject this arguing that by him not emerging does not entail the obligation of Zuhr being dropped due to it being the original obligation before Jumuah. It may be the case that he performed his Zuhr at home but according to Atā’s assumption, he did not perform Zuhr Salāh either.  See al-Awn al-Ma’bood, sharh Sunnan Abu Dawood vol 3, p. 287

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ الْوَصَّابِيُّ، الْمَعْنَى، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ الضَّبِّيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ رُفَيْعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَجْزَأَهُ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ، وَإِنَّا مُجَمِّعُونَ»

قال الشافعي: وإذا كان يوم الفطر يوم الجمعة، صلَّى الإِمام العيد حين تحل الصلاة، ثم أذن لمن حضره من غير أهل المصر [في] أن ينصرفوا، إن شاؤوا إلى أهليهم، ولا يعودون إلى الجمعة، والاختيار لهم أن يقيموا حتى يُجَمِّعُوا، أو يعودوا بعد انصرافهم إن قدروا حتى يجمعوا، وإن لم يفعلوا فلا حرج إن شاء الله.

قال الشافعي: ولا يجوز هذا لأحد من أهل المصر، أن يَدَعوا أن يجمِّعوا إلَّا من عذر؛ يجوز لهم به ترك الجمعة، وإن كان يوم عيد، انتهى. ثم أقول: كتب الشيخ مولانا محمد يحيى المرحوم من تقرير شيخه حضرة الشيخ مولانا رشيد أحمد الكَنكَوهي – رحمه الله تعالى- ما حاصله: أنه اتفق ذلك في عهد النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – بأنه وافق يوم الجمعة يوم عيد، وكان أهل القرى يجتمعون لصلاة العيدين ما لا يجتمعون لغيرهما كما هو العادة في أكثر أهل القرى، وكان في انتظارهم الجمعة بعد الفراغ من صلاة العيد حرج على أهل القرى، فلما فرغ رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – من صلاة العيد نادى مناديه: من شاء منكم أن يصلي فليصل، ومن شاء الرجوع فليرجع، وكان ذلك خطابًا لأهل القرى المجتمعين ثَمَّ، والقرينة على ذلك بأنه قد صرح فيه بأنا مُجَمِّعُون، والمراد فيه من جمع المتكلم أهل المدينة. فهذا يدل دلالة واضحة بأن الخطاب في قوله: “من شاء منكم أن يصلي” إلى أهل القرى لا إلى أهل المدينة،

(مَالِكٌ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ أَزْهَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ شَهِدْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ إنَّ هَذَيْنِ يَوْمَانِ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – عَنْ صِيَامِهِمَا يَوْمُ فِطْرِكُمْ مِنْ صِيَامِكُمْ وَالْآخَرُ يَوْمٌ تَأْكُلُونَ فِيهِ مِنْ نُسُكِكُمْ قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ ثُمَّ شَهِدْت الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَجَاءَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَخَطَبَ فَقَالَ إنَّهُ قَدْ اجْتَمَعَ لَكُمْ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعَالِيَةِ أَنْ يَنْتَظِرَ الْجُمُعَةَ فَلْيَنْتَظِرْهَا وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ فَقَدْ أَذِنْتُ لَهُ

(فَصْلٌ) :

وَقَوْلُهُ ثُمَّ شَهِدْت الْعِيدَ مَعَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَجَاءَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَخَطَبَ عَلَى نَحْوِ مَا تَقَدَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إنَّهُ قَدْ اجْتَمَعَ لَكُمْ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ يَعْنِي أَنَّ يَوْمَ الْعِيدِ صَادَفَ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعَالِيَةِ أَنْ يَنْتَظِرَ الْجُمُعَةَ فَلْيَنْتَظِرْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ فَقَدْ أَذِنْت لَهُ، الْعَالِيَةُ مِنْ الْعَوَالِي قَالَ مَالِكٌ بَيْنَ أَبْعَدِ الْعَوَالِي وَبَيْنَ الْمَدِينَةِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَمْيَالٍ وَهِيَ مَنَازِلُ حَوَالِي الْمَدِينَةِ سُمِّيَتْ الْعَوَالِي لِإِشْرَافِ مَوَاضِعِهَا وَأَهْلُ الْعَوَالِي يَلْزَمُهُمْ حُضُورُ الْجُمُعَةِ إلَّا أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ رَأَى أَنَّهُ إذَا اجْتَمَعَ عِيدَانِ فِي يَوْمٍ جَازَ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَهُمْ فِي التَّخَلُّفِ عَنْ الْجُمُعَةِ وَرَوَى ابْنُ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ مَالِكٍ وَلَمْ يَبْلُغْنِي أَنَّ أَحَدًا أَذِنَ لِأَهْلِ الْعَوَالِي غَيْرُ عُثْمَانَ.

وَقَدْ اخْتَلَفَ النَّاسُ فِي جَوَازِ ذَلِكَ فَرَوَى ابْنُ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ غَيْرُ جَائِزٍ وَأَنَّ الْجُمُعَةَ تَلْزَمُهُمْ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ وَرَوَى ابْنُ وَهْبٍ وَمُطَرِّفٌ وَابْنُ الْمَاجِشُونِ عَنْ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ جَائِزٌ وَالصَّوَابُ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ فِيهِ الْإِمَامُ كَمَا أَذِنَ عُثْمَانُ وَأَنْكَرُوا رِوَايَةَ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ وَبِذَلِكَ قَالَ أَبُو حَنِيفَةُ وَالشَّافِعِيُّ.

وَجْهُ رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَوْله تَعَالَى {إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ} [الجمعة: 9] وَلَمْ يَخُصَّ عِيدًا مِنْ غَيْرِهِ فَوَجَبَ أَنْ يُحْمَلَ عَلَى عُمُومِهِ إلَّا مَا خَصَّهُ الدَّلِيلُ وَمِنْ جِهَةِ الْمَعْنَى أَنَّ الْفَرَائِضَ لَيْسَ لِلْأَئِمَّةِ الْإِذْنُ فِي تَرْكِهَا وَإِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ بِحَسْبِ الْعُذْرِ فَمَتَى أَسْقَطَهَا الْعُذْرُ سَقَطَتْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِلْإِمَامِ الْمُطَالَبَةُ وَإِنْ ثَبَتَتْ لِعَدَمِ الْعُذْرِ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِلْإِمَامِ إسْقَاطُهَا.

وَوَجْهُ الرِّوَايَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ مَا يَلْحَقُ النَّاسَ مِنْ الْمَشَقَّةِ بِالتَّكْرَارِ وَالتَّأَخُّرِ وَهِيَ صَلَاةٌ يَسْقُطُ فَرْضُهَا بِطُولِ الْمَسَافَةِ وَبِالْمَشَقَّةِ وَاَللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ وَأَحْكُمُ، وَمِنْ جِهَةِ الْإِجْمَاعِ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ خَطَبَ بِذَلِكَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ وَهُوَ وَقْتُ احْتِفَالِ النَّاسِ وَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ وَيَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعْنَى قَوْلِ عُثْمَانَ – رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ – قَدْ أَذِنْت لَهُ يُرِيدُ أَعْلَمْت النَّاسَ أَنِّي أُجِيزُهُ وَآخُذُ بِهِ وَلَا أُنْكِرُ عَلَى مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَجُوزُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَخْذُ النَّاسِ بِالْمَجِيءِ إلَى الْجُمُعَةِ وَالْإِنْكَارُ عَلَى مَنْ تَخَلَّفَ عَنْهَا إلَّا لِعُذْرٍ مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ فَإِنْ كَانَ مُخْتَلَفًا فِيهِ لَزِمَ النَّاسَ اتِّبَاعُ رَأْيِ الْإِمَامِ إذَا كَانَ مِثْلَ عُثْمَانَ – رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ -.
